A study done in 2017 by the World Health Organization concluded that “Continuous support during labor may improve outcomes for women and infants, including increased spontaneous vaginal birth, shorter duration of labor, and decreased cesarean birth, instrumental vaginal birth, use of any analgesia, use of regional analgesia, low five-minute Apgar score and negative feelings about childbirth experiences.” 

The physiological effects of continuous support during labor reduce the chances of needing a c-section by 51%. Furthermore, Doula support has reduced the length of labor by 25%, the use of analgesia by 35%, Pitocin augmentation by 40%, epidural anesthesia use by 60%, and the use of forceps or vacuum by 30%.
